Will my car insurance company be informed after deregistration?
Yes and no. Find out here how to do it and what you should do.
Vehicle deregistration is done quickly. Online or at the registration office, you quickly have your deregistration confirmation in your hand. But what happens to the insurance and vehicle tax?
Motor Vehicle Taxes (Germany)
Motor vehicle tax is administered centrally by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Immediately after the vehicle is deregistered, the KBA receives the information that it is no longer liable for tax. The KBA will therefore refund the tax paid in advance to the account on file, calculated pro rata over the year.
And what about my insurance?
Your insurance will also, theoretically, be informed by the registration office after deregistration and your insurance cover will automatically end at 11.59 pm on the day of deregistration. This will also generally be automatically informed by the registration office after you deregister and your insurance coverage ends automatically at 11:59 p.m. on the day you deregister. However, behind the scenes it can be delayed due to various factors. By deregistering, your insurance company also doesn't know whether you want to cancel your contract or just leave it alone. It is therefore advisable to inform the insurance company about the vehicle deregistration with the deregistration confirmation on the day of deregistration and Write briefly whether you want to cancel the contract or use it again for a new vehicle in the near future. This information will help you avoid double debiting of insurance costs and get the money you have already paid back into your account more quickly.
If you deregister your car with us, we will be happy to send the information to your insurance company for you. All we need is the name of your insurance company and whether you want to continue using the contract for a new car or not.
Summary:
To ensure that you get your money back quickly and that the information is actually sent to your insurance company, we recommend that you always send the information yourself. If you unsubscribe through us, we will be happy to do this for you. Click here to go to our deregistration form
