Your Car Got Stolen? What You Should Do Now!
Find out if it is financially advantageous to deregister or temporarily deactivate your car, depending on the planned duration of inactivity.
It is indeed the nightmare of every car owner: the car has been stolen. A moment of shock, anger, and uncertainty. However, in such a situation, it is important to keep a clear head and take the right steps immediately. In this blog post, I want to share with you what you should do if your beloved vehicle has been stolen.
1. Stay calm and assess the situation
The initial shock is profound, but try to calm down. Make sure that the car has indeed been stolen and is not simply parked elsewhere. Sometimes, one might forget the location. Therefore, thoroughly check the surroundings before informing the police.
2. Call the police immediately
If suspicions are confirmed, and your car has indeed been stolen, it is crucial to inform the police immediately. Provide all necessary information, such as the vehicle type, color, license plate, and any unique features or stickers on the car. The more detailed your description, the higher the chances of recovering the vehicle.
3. Report the theft to your insurance
After informing the police, the next step is to notify your insurance company. Provide them with all relevant information and submit the necessary documents. The insurance will then assist you in processing the claim.
4. Check for tracking services
Modern cars are often equipped with tracking services. Check if your vehicle has such a service and contact the provider. They may be able to help you locate the stolen car and relay the location to the police.
5. Share information on social media
Utilize the reach of social media to spread information about the theft. Share photos and all relevant details so that others can help you find your car. Often, community tips lead to quicker success.
6. Review nearby surveillance cameras
If your car was stolen in an area covered by surveillance cameras, inquire with businesses or residents if they have recordings. These could provide crucial clues about the thief or the location where the car was abandoned.
7. Stay in touch with the police and your insurance
Losing a car is never easy, but by acting quickly and thoughtfully, you can increase the chances of recovering it. Stay strong and remember that cooperation with the police, insurance, and the community can help you get your stolen car back.
If all else fails and you don't get your car back
If your stolen car is not found, and police investigations are unsuccessful, consider officially deregistering it. Deregistering the stolen vehicle has several reasons:
1. Insurance resolution: By deregistering the stolen vehicle at the registration office, you signal that you are no longer responsible for the vehicle. This is important to settle insurance claims and ensure that you are not held liable for any potential damages or traffic violations.
2. Tax relief: Deregistering the stolen vehicle helps you avoid paying vehicle taxes for a car you no longer own. This can provide financial relief in an already burdensome situation.
3. Prevention of misuse: If your car is stolen and you don't deregister it, thieves could use it for criminal activities, such as bank robberies or other offenses. By deregistering, you signal to the authorities that you are no longer the owner of the vehicle.
To deregister your car, contact the local registration office. Report the theft and initiate the necessary steps to deregister the vehicle. Don't forget to bring all relevant documents, including the police theft report and your vehicle papers.
It is advisable to continue staying in contact with the police in case of new developments or if the vehicle is eventually found. Legal aspects may vary depending on the country and region, so it is recommended to inquire directly with local authorities.
